CHOC Pediatric Health System — By keeping kids healthy, we keep the magic of childhood alive and well. CHOC Small World Guild is dedicated to helping raise money for the many needs of the hospital and patients.
A personal story:
When our daughter was 28 weeks pregnant with her first child, the doctor she was seeing in Los Angeles and found the baby’s heart rate was greater than 300 beats per minute. They talked of delivering the baby early. The baby was diagnosed with SVT – a life-threatening heart arrhythmia. My husband was on staff at St. Joseph Hospital and CHOC, he told our daughter to come to Orange County. He told her that a baby with problems needs to be taken care of at CHOC. The CHOC pediatric cardiologist, with a specialty in arrhythmias, was called. The baby was delivered on time, spent a few days in the NICU and successfully had a heart ablation procedure when he was three years old that completely cured him. He is a thriving eleven-old now.

When our same daughter had her third child, the healthy newborn was rushed to CHOC with a serious medical emergency. She had mid-gut volvulus. She spent 68 days in the NICU and lost 80% of her small bowel. CHOC saved her life. It’s hard to explain the mirid of CHOC personnel and volunteers that made a difference in her care. Pediatric surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, GI doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, music therapists, child life specialists, etc. The outstanding care she received made her the darling, rambunctious, six-year-old she is today.
