CHOC—now part of Rady’s Children’s Health—saved our daughter Kara’s life. As a newborn, she was rushed to CHOC’s NICU facing serious complications, and because of the extraordinary doctors, nurses, and care team who fought for her, she was given the chance to grow up. Every birthday, every milestone, every dream she now gets to chase is because CHOC was there on her very first day. Our family will never stop being grateful for the hope, healing, and compassion CHOC gave us in one of the most terrifying moments of our lives.

This year, we have the privilege of walking in honor of Avreea Marathe Shendrikar. 

Avreea was born on July 1st, 2015. During the pregnancy, her mom faced placental abruption. Placental abruption is a serious pregnancy complication where the placenta prematurely separates from the inner wall of the uterus before delivery. This deprives the fetus of vital oxygen and nutrients and can cause severe, life-threatening bleeding for both the mother and baby. Despite the incredible strength shown by her and her family, Avreea sadly passed away.
Following her passing, Avreea’s ashes were spread in the ocean as part of her Memorial. Since then, her family has honored her memory each year by celebrating her birthday on a boat in the ocean surrounded by the water she is remembered by. Her younger siblings sing Happy Birthday to her and put flowers in the water representing how old she would have been.
