On the day this young woman made me an auntie, she was taken out of the room so fast I didn’t get my turn to hold her and tell her the wonderful things Kara Nguyen would be.

What had just happened? There were lots of blinking lights, codes spouted out, and the many nurses and doctors wheeling out a little Smurf to NICU.

I stayed with my sister and brother-in-law and watched them enter parenthood with a very large bag of mixed emotions—emotions you shouldn’t ever have to feel as new mommies and daddies.

Kara was treated for Respiratory Distress Syndrome and early-onset neonatal sepsis, which turns out to be fairly common in newborns. But, that one week in NICU alongside other families enduring far longer stays with tiny babies facing even greater illnesses, humility and solidarity inspired them to do more.
Imagine the helplessness, the pain, the bills…

Every dollar raised from this magical event will support health care programs, education, and research at CHOC and CHOC at Mission Hospitals. More than two million children a year depend on CHOC. And our community's generosity is what provides access to the best possible care and services.

We are planning some awesome fundraisers and Kara is enlisting young artists to help her with this year's Kara Care Card Campaign. If you know of any artists, please send them our way. We are also planning a pretty big fundraiser April/May timeframe that also coincides will celebrating Kara's 13th birthday! That's right, she's going to be a teenager.
