Mateo's Mad Hatters

For the past four years, I’ve proudly participated in CHOC Walk in the Park as a CHOC employee, fundraising to support the exceptional care CHOC provides to our patients and families. This year, however, the CHOC Walk holds a much deeper, more personal meaning for our family.

In the early morning of March 24, at 35 weeks pregnant, I experienced a placental abruption—a terrifying and traumatic event that led to an emergency ambulance ride and an urgent C-section at our local hospital.

Our son, Mateo, was born with kidney abnormalities and a small chest cavity, which made it difficult for him to breathe on his own. Immediately after delivery, he was intubated and transferred to CHOC’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). CHOC’s NICU quickly became our home away from home, where Mateo received outstanding care from compassionate specialists, nurses, and clinical teams. Thanks to their tireless efforts, we were able to bring Mateo home after 64 days in the NICU.

Mateo’s medical journey is far from over. He was recently diagnosed with Caroli Disease, a rare liver condition that affects how bile flows through the body. It can cause infections and other complications, and while it requires ongoing care, we remain resilient and hopeful—because we know he is in the best hands with CHOC.

From physical therapy, feeding therapy, and respiratory support to the emotional and educational guidance we’ve received, Zach and I are endlessly grateful for everything CHOC has done—and continues to do—for Mateo and our family.

We are firsthand recipients of the incredible healthcare programs, education, and research made possible through CHOC. It’s only right that we give back by helping ensure other families have access to the same extraordinary care.

You can help us exceed our fundraising goal for the benefit of the children's health and well-being.
