When pregnant with our twins, I had what is called TTTS (Twin To Twin Transfusion Syndrome). Essentially, the boys' placentas fused together, giving one more blood supply than the other. With not much time to decide, and only a 10% chance only one twin would survive, we made the decision to move forward with laser ablation surgery at 18 weeks. Doctors laparoscopically sealed the connections that were being shared between the placentas and removed 2 liters of amniotic fluid.

The boys were born at 29 weeks and immediately placed into the NICU. Grayson spent 51 days in the NICU, coming home just before Jackson who stayed for 53 days.

One of the side effects of the laser ablation surgery, which was unknown to us at the time is ABS (Amniotic Band Syndrome). ABS is when very fine strands from the amniotic sac can detach and wrap around limbs. In Grayson's case, fine strands wrapped around his upper left bicep and partially on his left thigh, causing a major restriction of blood flow to his arm.  Immediately after being born he had surgery to remove the band. Because of the swift actions and knowledge of the surgeons and doctors, they were able to save his arm with no long term effects.

Also due to TTTS and being a preemie,  he later had a lobectomy removing the lower portion of his left lung due to excess fluid. We are so blessed to say they are thriving and are now healthy, 4 year old boys!

Each year we participate in the annual CHOC Walk to help raise money for future research and the best possible care and services for current and future patients, just as we were grateful to receive.

Please help our team, TWINFINITY AND BEYOND, exceed our fundraising goal by donating to CHOC Hospital.

Donate now by clicking the "Donate" button above.

Many thanks in advance for helping us write a new future for so many children and their families.

With love and gratitude,

Briana
