Hi everyone!
This year, we're raising money for our very first CHOC Walk in honor of our beautiful 1-year-old daughter, Zoey Jay! 💜
When Zoey was just 6 months old, she underwent an invasive surgery called Cranial Vault Reconstruction (CVR) to treat a condition called sagittal craniosynostosis.
Craniosynostosis is a birth defect where one or more of the sutras in a baby's skull fuse too early. In Zoey's case, it restricted her brain's ability to grow, caused increased pressure inside her head, and resulted in an abnormal head shape.
For the first four months of Zoey's life, I fought to get answers because I knew something wasn't right. She was constantly uncomfortable and inconsolable, but I struggled to get the help she needed. After finally receiving an emergency referral from a pediatrician for a CT scan and a brain ultrasound, the CT scan confirmed that Zoey had sagittal craniosynostosis.
Because her diagnosis came later, she was no longer eligible for the less invasive treatment option and instead had to undergo Cranial Vault Reconstruction. She endured a nearly 4½-hour surgery that required an incision from ear to ear and a blood transfusion. Our neurosurgeon later told us that as soon as he released the pressure on her skull, they could actually see her brain relax. Hearing those words was both heartbreaking and reassuring—we finally knew she was getting the relief she desperately needed.
I can't begin to describe the fear and anxiety of handing our 6-month-old baby over for such a major surgery. It was the hardest thing we've ever experienced as a family.
CHOC Children's Hospital turned the worst days of our lives into an experience filled with compassion, comfort, and hope. During our four-day stay, every doctor, nurse, and staff member treated our family with incredible kindness and care. We will forever be grateful for everything they did for Zoey.
Today, Zoey is a thriving 1-year-old, and we're so excited to participate in our first CHOC Walk to give back and honor her incredible journey.
