When my daughter was just 9 years old, she woke to unbearable chest pain. She complained, “my heart is beating really fast.” After rushing her to CHOC, the physician in the Emergency Department told us to follow up with a Cardiologist. Then, just a few days later, she experienced another episode. This time, we called paramedics and she was transported again to CHOC. Her EKG revealed Supraventicular Tachycardia (SVT), a rapid heartbeat that develops when the normal electrical impulses of the heart are disrupted. Upon arrival to CHOC, we met with pediatric cardiology specialists, Dr. Michael Recto and Dr. Anthony McCanta. They gave us a few options and highly suggested that Calissa undergo surgery. She immediately underwent cardiac surgery the next day. She was placed in a medically-induced coma for the surgery. Thankfully Calissa recovered quickly and was sent home after a few days.
I attended my first CHOC Walk with my family including Calissa in 2018. We were moved to see how many community members come together to support CHOC and their mission: to Nurture, Advance and Protect the Health and Well-Being of Children. This event holds a special place in our hearts, and this is our 4th year participating. We're excited to fundraise again this year to help more children.
As a respiratory therapist at CHOC for over 7 years, I work very closely to the patients and families that are directly impacted and helped by your donations. Your donation makes an immediate impact on families going through the most challenging time in their lives.
Even as the pandemic continues to linger, and has changed our world, one thing remains unchanged: children still count on CHOC to help them get better. Which is why this year's event will be reimagined so we can once again join together as a community.
