I am so excited to be participating in CHOC Walk's 30th anniversary event - CHOC Adventure in the Park presented by the Disneyland® Resort to raise funds for CHOC!
My reason why this is important especially this year is because it has been a long journey with my daughter Angelica. We spent a week at CHOC when she was 2 weeks old. She lost 6oz of weight over the weekend when the Dr had me supplement formula. CHOC did every test they could to figure out why she wasn't thriving. Being a new mom this was a lot emotionally seeing our daughter being monitored 24/7 with a team of specialists. The nurses and the staff were absolutely amazing. On our last day we found out that our daughter has DiGeorge Syndrome. Every year has been a learning experience with Doctors, Speech Therapy, Blood work, Specialists, etc. She has been in speech therapy since she was 2 years old. She didn't start really talking until she was 4.5 years old for anyone to really understand what she was saying. When she was 6.5 is when we found out that she has a velopharyngeal dysfunction causing her throat not to close all the way. There were a few options with most being major surgery but could also cause issues later in life. So with the great team of Specialists and Speech therapists we decided to see if over time she could build up the muscle. Well this past year she has hit so many milestones! She graduated from one of her speech and language programs. Her team of specialists are proud of the progression she has made. She no longer needs surgery for her throat, although it still doesn't fully close, it isn't affecting her the way it has the past 10 years! Although we still have a long adventure ahead of us. I am so grateful for CHOC and truly caring about their patients! I am excited to support CHOC!
