Team Ryden
We're so excited to be participating in the 2023 CHOC Walk in the Park presented by Disneyland® Resort on Sunday, August 20, to raise funds for CHOC. The CHOC Walk is back!
Ryden was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome in utero. HLHS is a congenital heart defect in which the left side of his heart is underdeveloped leaving him with a single ventricle circulation system.
In 2009, at just 5 days old, Ryden underwent his first open heart surgery, the Norwood Procedure. The surgery went well, but his left vocal chord was paralyzed causing him to need a G-tube to be fed. His second open heart surgery, the Glenn, was performed in September of 2009. Ryden went through a rough patch after the Glenn, but was released 4 weeks later. His last surgery, the Fontan, was performed in November of 2013, and although he was expected to have some complications, everything went smoothly, and he was discharged just 10 days post-surgery.
In 2022, Ryden was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a rare congenital eye defect. RP is a group of rare eye diseases that affect the retina, making cells in the retina break down slowly over time, causing vision loss. So far Ryden has lost all of his peripheral vision and has lost his ability to see well in the dark.
During his life, Ryden has had numerous heart catheterizations, hospitalizations, and other complications, but through everything Ryden has always kept a smile on his face and has shown strength and courage. Team Ryden was formed because of his strength and our desire to give back to CHOC and it's staff. Ryden has been a patient at CHOC since the day he was born and we have been nothing but happy with the staff and the entire CHOC organization. We are indebted to them for keeping Ry healthy and giving him the chance to live, and to thrive. We are proud to be walking in honor of Team Ryden and the hospital that has done so much for us!
Proceeds from this magical event will support health care programs, education, and research at CHOC and CHOC at Mission Hospitals. Help us exceed our fundraising goal for the benefit of the children and families of Southern California by:
-Donating now by clicking the $ button next to the team member you'd like to donate to below or
-Joining Team Ryden at this year's event by clicking the "Join Our Team" button on the right
Many thanks in advance for helping us make a difference for the children and families of Orange County!
With Gratitude,
Team Ryden
