I'm so excited to be participating in the 2024 CHOC Walk in the Park presented by Disneyland® Resort on Sunday, July 21, to raise funds for CHOC.

In 2016, we formed Team Super Desmond after we went through a traumatic birth experience with our son, Desmond. Immediately after birth, he was rushed over to CHOC to receive specialized treatments only available there, and that was the beginning of CHOC becoming an integral part of our family's life.

Desmond spent 53 days at CHOC before he was a year old, from the NICU to the CVICU, and the PICU to the Neurology Unit. We've spent hundreds of hours in their Rehab department for outpatient physical and feeding therapy, along with countless other doctor visits at their Clinic to see one of many specialists who follow him for his various medical conditions. His main diagnosis is Cerebral Palsy caused by his traumatic birth.

This past year has been one of the more challenging ones for our Super Desmond, and we've had to rely on CHOC more than ever. After hitting a big growth spurt last Summer, Desmond's seizures became the worst they've ever been and uncontrollable with his medications. Last October, an overnight EEG in their neurology unit turned into a week-long stay because the test results showed a huge increase in seizure activity and we quickly had to change up his meds to get things back under control.

The new medication worked to get the seizures back under control, but unfortunately it had some negative side effects--the biggest one was worsening his already compromised respiratory system. This contributed to 5 separate pneumonias over 6 months--on top of Desmond experiencing a really rough cold and flu season, battling RSV and multiple cold viruses. He was admitted to CHOC 6 times during those same 6 months between all the illnesses and seizure issues--a new record for him unfortunately. We're in the middle of changing up his seizure medications again to hopefully get his health back on track while still keeping the seizures under control.

The doctors, nurses, therapists and staff at CHOC have done so much for Des and our family the past 8 years. We like to give back by joining their Walk every year and raising much needed funds for this phenomenal cause!

We can't wait to reunite with our team and the rest of our Walk community for an early morning stroll through Disneyland® park and Disney California Adventure® park. You won't want to miss this unique experience filled with entertainment and surprises before the parks open to the public.

Proceeds from this magical event will support health care programs, education, and research at CHOC and CHOC at Mission Hospitals. Help us exceed our fundraising goal for the benefit of the children and families of Southern California by:
