Steele's Story:

During our 20 week ultrasound, the tech saw something that was a little "off" with Steele's heart.  From there, we were referred to CHOC to meet with a cardiologist and surgeon who diagnosed Steele with Coarctation of the Aorta and a Bicuspid Aortic Valve with Mild Aortic Stenosis.  While I was pregnant, the Doctors and team at CHOC frequently met with us to help prepare us in every way they could; from walking us through the diagnosis, moral support, and also giving us a tour of the NICU to help us feel more "prepared" for what was to come.
Once Steele was born, the NICU team at CHOC was there to wheel him off right away over to CHOC from St. Joes to monitor him and prepare him for the known surgery he would need. At just 2 weeks old, he had heart surgery to repair his pinched Aorta. And after many days filled with ups and downs (and nearly a month later), our little family was finally discharged to go home together.  We will be eternally grateful for the Cardiologists, Neonatologists, Surgeons, Therapists, Nurses, and Volunteers who kept our sweet baby boy's heart beating and saved his life. The Doctor's at CHOC continue to care for Steele, and we are so thankful for all of the support we have been given by everyone there.

With that being said, we are so excited to be participating in the 2024 CHOC Walk in the Park presented by Disneyland® Resort on Sunday, July 21, to raise funds for CHOC!

We can't wait to unite with our Walk community for an early morning stroll through Disneyland® park and Disney California Adventure® park. You won't want to miss this one-of-a-kind experience filled with special entertainment and surprises before the parks open to the public.

Every dollar raised from this magical event will support health care programs, education, and research at CHOC and CHOC at Mission Hospitals. More than two million children a year depend on CHOC. And our community's generosity is what provides access to the best possible care and services.

You can help us exceed our fundraising goal for the benefit of the children's health and well-being by:

Many thanks in advance for helping us write a new future for so many children and their families.

With Gratitude and Love,

Sarah and Andrew Schaffner
