I am so excited to be participating in the 2019 CHOC Walk in the Park at the Disneyland Resort on August 11th to raise funds for CHOC Children's Hospital!
I have always had the opportunity to donate to CHOC Children’s Hospital as an associate of Marriott’s Newport Cost Villas; never in a million years did I think my family would be able to see where these donations go first hand.
February 2012, Stella and Aaleyah were born into our family, twin girls, we couldn’t be happier! After a few short months, Stella started having seizures without explanation. We sought care from our current provider but quickly realized they couldn’t give us answers that would help our baby girl. That’s when I remembered CHOC Children’s Hospital. From the beginning, they were proactive in ordering tests and just after a few months in their care, the CHOC team was able to pinpoint the cause of her seizures. Stella had been born with a genetic disorder called Dravet Syndrome which is a rare form of intractable epilepsy. Although there was nothing that we could do to “fix” this, the team at CHOC Children’s Hospital helped teach us how we could live everyday life and control her seizures.
Valentine’s Day 2016, Stella had a seizure at home and was rushed to CHOC Children’s Hospital. The team in the PICU immediately gravitated to Stella and our family. They were hesitant that she would make it through the night and when she did, there was a line of specialist waiting to speak with us the next morning. Even though the situation was very grim, the team kept our spirits up, making not only my husband and I as comfortable as they could by providing frequent updates, but also their Child Life Specialist Team who worked with our other children as they tried to process the situation.
Stella would need round the clock care for the next month, and all through this process, the doctors, nurses, child life specialists, and even volunteers who interacted with our family throughout this month would constantly check in on us and offer help; even if we were not on their rotation for the day. Her doctors would even call on their day off to see how she was doing. Stella became an angel on March 14, 2016, a blow that not only effected our family but the family we had gained there in the PICU. If it wasn’t for this team, I don’t know how our family could have ever processed this event.
The fundraising efforts of the CHOC Walk make an immediate impact on families going through the most challenging time in their lives. CHOC provides the highest level of care not only to patients, but to the siblings, parents, and extended family that make up their critical support teams.
