Our son Blake Hunter Walton was born on November 27, 2016 with Pulmonary Atresia w/ Intact Ventricular Septum (PAIVS). Within hours of his birth, he was transported by ambulance to Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) where several days later he would undergo a procedure to open and expand his Pulmonary Valve to allow blood to flow to his lungs.
We spent the first 25 days of Blake’s life in CHOC's Intensive Care Units, with daily ups and downs, sometimes questioning if we’d ever make it home as a family. By far, it was the most traumatic experience of our lives. Blake’s health has improved with each follow-up procedure and surgery, and now, our 2.5 year old son couldn't be better. Blake will continue to be a frequent patient of CHOC, as he will need his Pulmonary Valve surgically replaced as soon as his natural valve can no longer keep up with his heart. But until then, Blake is healthy and enjoying every day with his newborn sister, Olivia.
As you can imagine, CHOC has become a part of our family. Blake’s entire team of doctors, specialists and nurses were absolutely amazing and we are indebted to them forever. They took care of every one of his needs (and ours) and most importantly, they saved his life.
Many do not know that Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is one of the most common types of major birth defects, affecting close to 1% of newborns. Parents of 40,000+ babies born in the U.S. every year live our same nightmare, and within seconds, they find themselves clinging onto life wondering if they’ll ever get to go home as a family.
Without CHOC, we as parents would be without our son. In order to help give back, and to ensure that CHOC can continue its mission for Blake and everyone else, please join us in Blake’s 3rd Annual CHOC Walk. With your help, we can continue to raise awareness about CHD, and do our part to make sure that other families in situations like ours can rely on CHOC to keep their families whole.
A special thank you to everyone that has supported us throughout this continuing journey! The three of us would not be where we are today without you!
