As a nonprofit hospital, CHOC relies on community support to provide leading-edge care for infants, children and adolescents. Over half of all inpatients and children served in CHOC's specialty care clinics, along with over 95% of its primary care clinic patients, have public insurance which covers roughly half of the full cost of care. Even private insurance frequently does not cover the full cost of care for children with life-threatening or chronic illnesses that require lengthy hospital stays and intensive outpatient services. To provide this uncompensated care, CHOC relies on contributions to the KidsCare Fund. KidsCare allows CHOC to provide a family-centered approach to care regardless of a family's ability to pay. Family-centered care involves parents and caregivers in decision-making processes, respects their values, beliefs, and cultural backgrounds, and provides a range of supports that foster healing. The goals of the KidsCare Fund are as follows: • Ensure that no child/family is ever turned away from CHOC for lack of ability to pay; • Provide the full array of needed therapies and services regardless of the type of insurance; • Ensure that every child with special healthcare needs, including life-threatening illness or injury, receives the same level of high-quality care.
